Fra Angelico - Early Renaissance Painter (1395-1455)
Fra Angelico’s religious compositional paintings paved the way for a more modern manner of painting. His “rare and perfect” talent found favor with important patrons and two Popes. In 1982 Pope John Paul II proclaimed his “beautification” in recognition of his holiness in life, thereby giving him the title of “Blessed” official.
Nineteenth- century enthusiasts celebrated Fra Angelico, (the angelic friar), for the spiritual content and lyrical quality of his works in frescoes and altarpieces. One of these is the Assumption and Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Originally created in 1434 as part of a set of four reliquaries, (containers for holy relics), for the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence. Then, as now, Fra Angelico’s iconic angels capture a sense of adoration and serenity in each painting he created. The Isabelle Stewart Gardner Museum, located on in Boston, Massachusetts, acquired this rare painting in 1899.
This angel is a derivative work of art, intended to interpret one of the kneeling angels from a 2-dimensional image into a 3-dimensional representation of the details shown in the original painting.
Made of cold cast resin. Hand painted.
